The Vision
Built in 2020 on land that has been in the family since 1964, this modern farmhouse custom home honors its agricultural roots while delivering the comfort, performance, and efficiency of a new build. The homeowners wanted the timeless farmhouse feel, but without old wood windows, drafty rooms, or squeaky floors.
The Setting
Nestled on a 120-acre Michigan farm, the home sits on a hill at the back of the property, creating expansive views in every direction. We strategically placed a wraparound porch and large Andersen casement windows to maximize natural light and showcase the surrounding farmland.
The Plan
Because of the home’s exposed location and open surroundings, we upgraded the wall assembly to 2×6 exterior walls, and added a continuous layer of foam insulation to fully air seal the structure. This approach improves energy efficiency and reduces wind infiltration. It also ensures long-term comfort, an essential element of any high-performance custom home.
The Craftsmanship
We carefully selected interior finishes to balance warmth and durability. The home features custom-built cabinetry in knotty alder, white oak, and painted finishes, along with rustic barn accents reclaimed from the original hay barn on the property. So, these details connect the new home directly to its history.
The Result
At the heart of the home is a full stone fireplace built from Michigan-sourced fieldstone, a natural complement to a working farm where fieldstones are always surfacing. The finished home blends modern farmhouse design with energy-efficient construction and meaningful, site-specific details. Together, these choices create a custom home that feels rooted, refined, and built to last.
